Business Opening Muhurat: Whose Kundli Counts?

Classical guidance is specific here. Astrobix explains that if the Moon is transiting the fourth, eighth or twelfth house from the birth sign of the person in whose name the business is done, the opening should be postponed, however good the day looks on paper.

Whose chart: owner, partner, or the person behind the counter?

For a proprietorship the answer is simple. The proprietor's chart is the one that counts.

Partnerships take more care. Two partners can have Moons in very different signs, and a day that suits one can fall in a weak position for the other. We'd check every partner who holds a real share and look for a date that doesn't hurt any of them. Pick the strongest window for the partner whose name leads the business when you have to choose.

A family business run by the son but registered to the father is common. Send both charts and say who is who. The person who signs and owns comes first. The person who will actually sit at the counter every morning comes a close second.

What the panchang part checks

The day itself is filtered in the usual way. Astrobix prefers fixed lagnas, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, for a business meant to last, and it says to avoid Bhadra.

Weekdays differ a little between sources. Astrobix allows any day except Tuesday. AstroMedha avoids both Tuesday and Saturday for new openings and suggests Monday for shops that expect heavy public footfall.

Pushya nakshatra gets special treatment. AstroMedha notes that many astrologers treat it as a near exception to minor concerns, which is why Pushya days fill up fast with ribbon cuttings. VedicFeed adds that Vaishakha, Jyeshtha and Kartika are the traditional months for new ventures.

None of this needs your birth details, which is why every website can publish it. The Moon check against the owner's chart is the part a list can't do for you.

What counts as the "opening" for your business?

For a shop the answer is obvious: the shutter goes up, the puja happens, the first customer pays. For many businesses today it isn't so clear.

An online store has a launch day, a first order and a company registration date, and they rarely fall on the same day. A clinic has a registration and an inauguration. A consultancy may have no physical opening at all.

Our view: time the moment the business first faces customers. For a shop that is the inauguration. For an online brand it is the day the store goes live and starts taking orders. Paperwork such as company incorporation can follow its own schedule, and VedPanchang notes that incorporating a company or signing a long-term contract can use its own muhurat if you want to time that as well.

A good date won't fix a bad location

Muhurat is about starting well. It won't rescue a shop with no parking, a launch with no stock, or prices the market won't pay.

Astrobix itself observes that some shops close within a few months of opening and reads that as a timing problem. Fair enough, but in our view rent and footfall close far more shops than Saturn does. Get the business plan right, then pick the strongest date you can. Treat the muhurat as the last step of planning, not a substitute for it.

Make the date fit your real schedule too. Interiors run late and suppliers miss deadlines, and a perfect Pushya morning with an empty shelf is a poor start.

• The city and address where the business opens (for an online business, where you operate from)
• The kind of business, and whether it is a shop, office, clinic or online launch
• The earliest date everything will really be ready
