So take the keys when the builder gives them. Then choose the entry date from the panchang and check it against the householder's kundli.

First, which kind of entry is it?

Tradition separates three kinds of griha pravesh, and the strictness changes with each. AstroMedha lists them as Apoorva for a brand new home, Sapoorva when you return after a long absence, and Dwandwah after repair or renovation.

A first entry into a new flat (Apoorva) gets the full set of rules. Coming back after rebuilding (Dwandwah) or after years away (Sapoorva) allows more flexibility. Most people searching for one have just bought a new house or flat, so the strict version is usually the one that applies to them, even when the move itself feels small because it's only across town.

Tell your astrologer which kind it is. A family moving back into a renovated ancestral house shouldn't wait four months for a date meant for a new build.

What the panchang filters, and what it can't

Panchang lists check nakshatra, tithi and weekday, then remove inauspicious periods such as Rahu Kaal, Yamaghanda and Panchak. The nakshatras that come up most often are Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada, which Godrej Properties' guide calls highly favourable.

Two things on that list can't know about you.

The first is your own Moon. Tarabalam and Chandrabalam are read from the householder's birth nakshatra and rashi, and Tarabalam can differ between two people on the same day. A date that is fine for your neighbour in the next tower can be a weak day for you.

The second is your front door. Dekho Panchang describes Bhoomi Dosha, a defect tied to the month and the direction of the main entrance. If the month's bad direction matches the way your door faces, the entry is deferred. No city-wide list can check that, because it doesn't know whether your door faces east or south.

That is why a griha pravesh muhurat as per kundli, the kind that suits your new house rather than the whole city, needs the owner's birth details and the entrance direction. With both, the generic list shrinks to the few dates that actually suit the house and the people moving in.

Some months are simply closed

You will notice whole months with no dates. That is the calendar working as designed. In 2025, Housing.com's list had no griha pravesh dates in July, August or September at all.

The closures come from a few rules. Dekho Panchang advises entering during Uttarayan where possible and avoiding Adhik Maas, Pitru Paksha and eclipse periods. Kharmas, when the Sun moves through Sagittarius or Pisces, suspends auspicious events as well.

Venus matters here too, not only for weddings. Vaya's panchang tool notes that while Venus is combust, neither a wedding nor a housewarming is set, and it shows that period running from about 7 December 2026 to 6 February 2027. If your possession letter says December, the nearest open dates are likely to be in late November or after early February.

Possession date and entry date can be months apart

Builders hand over flats on their schedule, not the panchang's. The gap between the two is where families get stuck, paying EMI on one home and rent on another while the new one sits empty.

Our view: if the gap is a few weeks, wait for the muhurat. If Venus and Kharmas stretch it to three months, have your dates checked before you sign another rent agreement. You'll know your real move-in date and can plan the lease around it instead of guessing.

Use the waiting time well. Painting, modular kitchen work and electrical fittings all go faster in an empty flat. Some families also move boxes in before the puja and only start living there from the muhurat. Ask your family pandit what your tradition allows.

What to send for a griha pravesh muhurat

• Date, time and place of birth of the owner, or of both owners for a joint purchase
• The direction your main door faces
• The city where the house is
• Which kind of entry it is: new, returning, or after renovation
• The earliest date you can realistically move
