Vehicle Purchase Muhurat: Delivery Day Matters Most

That one distinction saves most of the stress around car buying muhurat questions.

Booking, payment, delivery: which one gets the muhurat?

Buying a vehicle in India happens in stages. You book, you arrange the loan, you pay, the dealer registers it, and only then do you get the keys. Families often try to put a muhurat on every stage and end up waiting weeks for nothing.

ShubhPanchang points out that many buyers book earlier and take delivery on an auspicious day, so the good date lands on possession rather than paperwork. We agree with that approach. The moment the vehicle becomes yours to use is the one worth timing.

So book whenever the offer is good. Then tell the dealer the delivery date and time you want, and hold them to it. Dealers deliver on fixed days all the time for festivals, so asking for a particular morning is a normal request.

What the panchang looks for in a vehicle

Vehicles move, and the rules lean into that. Drik Panchang names the movable nakshatras Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishtha and Shatabhisha as the best for buying a car or any other vehicle. Property works the other way round: VedPanchang says land and property want fixed nakshatras, the opposite of what a vehicle wants.

Weekdays matter too. Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally avoided because of the link between Mars, Saturn and accidents, and Rahu Kaal is cut out of every day. One guide is blunt about it: never take the keys or drive out of the showroom during the daily 90 minute Rahu Kaal window.

Some guides go further and match the nakshatra to the vehicle. Garware's list suggests Swati and Mrigashira for two-wheelers, and Hasta or Pushya for commercial vehicles. Treat that as a tie-breaker between two good dates, not as the main rule.

Where your own kundli comes in

A panchang list is the same for everyone in your city. Your chart narrows it further.

Tarabalam compares the day's nakshatra with your birth nakshatra, so it can differ between two people on the same day. A Swati day can be excellent on paper and still sit in a weak tara for you.

Whose chart, then? The sensible choice is the person the vehicle is registered to. That follows the same logic the classical texts apply to a shop, where astrologers check the Moon from the birth sign of the person in whose name the business runs. If the car is in your father's name but you will drive it every day, give both sets of birth details and say so.

For a company vehicle or a fleet, the owner's chart matters less than the business's own timing. Send the details of whoever signs for it.

The festival rush has a cost

Dhanteras, Navratri and Akshaya Tritiya bring huge showroom crowds, and for good reason. Tradition treats Akshaya Tritiya as a self-proven muhurat that needs no separate timing, so a purchase anywhere in the tithi counts.

The catch is practical. On those days dealers juggle dozens of deliveries, and yours may slip by hours, sometimes past the window you wanted. If the exact time matters to you, a quiet Thursday with a good nakshatra and strong tarabalam can beat a festival afternoon spent waiting in a showroom lounge with free coffee and no car.

A festival is a fine choice when the vehicle is ready and the dealer has confirmed your delivery slot in writing. It is a poor one when you are buying in a hurry just to catch the date.

• The dates the dealer can actually deliver
• Whether it is a car, two-wheeler or commercial vehicle
